Junko dearest
I hope you receive this message
Despite the language wall, despite the distance.
There's forget-me-nots growing out of the concrete now
And holly and tinsels decorated the walls not to long ago.

The years have flown
And hopefully, you have too.
Just as there is a season for flowers and islands,
Snow eventually covers the ground,
Killing off everything in a gentle act of violence.

I've refilled the vase and replaced the orchards
With your statue carved of concrete
And clothed in linens and draped in wreaths.
But I broke it down.

I broke it down
To spare you the tomb of eulogy:
Nothing is worse than than memories set in stone.
Stone, like all imprisoned things, eventually rusts and erodes.

Dear Junko,
I know you're a million miles away
But I feel close to you somehow
As if I suffered those forty-four days
And I won't forgive them
But I know you will someday.
Perhaps you already have long ago
Though you'll never forget that pain.

I know you're laid to rest in Japan somewhere
Six feet down in the grave
Almost forty years have gone by
And someone in New York is invoking your name.

I hope we can meet someday
Away from the glass towers and concrete cages
Junko, I miss and love you
Even if we lived in different worlds
And different places.
